my fifty-seventh birthday party
This coming Saturday, January 26th, 2008, will be my 57th birthday, and I’m celebrating with a big, big party in the Detroit, Michigan, area. It’ll take place at a local Armenian Church. Not for religious reasons, although my beloved maternal grandmother was a member of the congregation, but because it’s the very best place to put on a spread of terrific Armenian Food for a hundred or so of my favorite relatives and friends.
I’m posting an old picture here, taken by my good buddy, Patrice Mermoud, in Paris, back in the summer of 1994, because we’re hoping that the people coming to the party will bring along old pictures of myself.
If you’re reading this, and you know me, and you’re going to be in the Detroit Area, post a comment and I’ll see about getting you into the birthday bash.
If you’ve already got an invitation, see if you can dredge up any old photographs and bring them along for my Aunt Mary (who has been doing an epic job of arranging this whole thing: I love you, Mary!) .
If you’ve got old pictures of me, whether from games, gatherings or Gencon (or wherever else), please get in touch.
Thanks!
Erick (San Rafael, California)

Hey, I didn’t know you were Armenian! Did you know that there’s a very large Armenian community here in Uruguay? There’s actually even a couple of Armenian restaurants in Montevideo.

Erick, its tempting, since I’m not that far away. Its just a matter of whether I have the time to spare, what with all of the demands of my waking hours as it is.

Erick - we are delighted that you and Kate will be celebrating your 57th birthday with family and friends in Detroit. The weather may be cold, but we know you will be very warmed by the love and friendship of all those who will be with you on your special day. Our wish is for you to really enjoy the party, the delicious Armenian food, the remaining days of your trip and, most of all, that your health continues to improve. We pray that the “gift” of chemo will allow you to enjoy many future birthdays also. Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Eric!
Great news about the chemo results also. Here’s to wishing you along the road to remission manumission. After the chemo is over, ask your doctor about the link in the Website field for whatever small good it might or might not do…

Hey Erick,
You probably don’t remember me from the Detroit Gaming Center. I used to come over and play in Pete’s game, with the bunch from Berkley high school. I was friends with Renita and Suzie.
Anyhow, my friend Renita told me about your bad luck with cancer. I just wanted to write and offer you my best wishes in your struggle!
Hope that you have a great time at your birthday tonight!

Erik,
Thank you for taking the time to find and invite me to the party it was wonderful. I especially enjoyed the comments about you and how you made a difference to the folks you touched. One of the things I always thought was so perceptive about you was your ability to engage people at an emotional level. That was true of gaming and life at a time when most role playing was more like a game of craps than anything else (“come on 18…come on”), you recognized the game should be more of a shared story and that by engaging the player at an emotional level the play become much more satisfying.
Also: Can you please release Rusty’s soul? He won’t ask, but I will for him.
Thanks again

Hey Erick,
I hadn’t checked your blog in recent weeks, and thus missed your party. Happy belated birthday, and many more. Glad to hear chemo is still going well, and that you’ve had a wealth of gaming opportunities this past month. Take care.

Happy Birthday! The players in my Amber game have been having it rough lately. I gave them all a few points of bad stuff and they unknowingly donated the points to you as good stuff. We met at Gen Con the year before AmberCon IX. Thank you for writing my favorite RPG and hang in there. My mother has beaten leukemia, breast cancer and skin cancer, and you are in my hopes and prayers to go 1-0. Get better Erick!
